What To Expect During a Stress Test

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that heart disease is the leading cause of fatalities in the United States. Doctors have used stress tests to prevent, diagnose, and treat the condition for over 50 years. At Central Florida Heart Associates, our cardiologists recommend a stress test in Orange City, FL, when you have an irregular heartbeat or display symptoms of chest pain or shortness of breath. Stress tests are beneficial for diagnosing a problem early when it's easiest to treat. If our doctor thinks you may benefit from a stress test, we're here to tell you what to expect during the appointment.

What to Expect During A Stress Test

A stress test is a non-invasive physical examination our cardiologist performs in-office to assess your heart's ability to respond to stress in a controlled setting. The test takes about 15 minutes, and you'll have to fast for two hours before the appointment. Upon preparation, we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes, informing us of any medications you consume daily, and whether or not you use an inhaler for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Before the stress test begins, the doctors record your blood pressure and pulse levels during a resting electrocardiogram (EKG). The doctor then places electrodes on your chest before instructing you to walk on a treadmill or stationary bike. During this exercise, the doctor increases the speed every two or three minutes before starting the cool-down phase.

If you have diabetes or a condition that puts you at risk for heart disease, consult our cardiologists at Central Florida Heart Associates to determine if a stress test is necessary.
